This four-hour continuing education program provides a comprehensive review of the prevention\, recognition\, and management of medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office. Participants will explore strategies for identifying medically compromised patients\, minimizing the risk of emergencies through thorough patient assessment and treatment planning\, and responding appropriately when emergencies arise. Topics include the recognition and management of syncope\, allergic reactions and anaphylaxis\, hypoglycemia\, seizures\, asthma\, chest pain\, stroke\, and cardiac arrest. The course will also review current recommendations for Basic Life Support (BLS)\, the proper use of emergency medications and equipment\, and best practices for developing office emergency protocols\, assigning team roles\, and conducting emergency preparedness drills. Through case-based discussions and practical application of current clinical guidelines\, participants will strengthen their ability to make timely clinical decisions and effectively manage medical emergencies in the dental setting. Upon completion of the course\, dentists will be better equipped to provide safe patient care and lead their teams with confidence during medical emergencies. He served in the United States Air Force for seven years\, three years as a restorative dentist and four years as an OMS. Dr. Harper has maintained a private practice in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, for the past 37 years. He has had an appointment with the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Cincinnati since 1990 and is actively involved in resident training. Dr. Harper currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery\, teaching academic courses in Surgical Anatomy and Medicine/Anesthesia topics for the OMS residents. In addition\, he has an appointment with the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center\, where he is actively involved in OMS resident clinical training. Dr. Harper is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has served as a Board examiner. He is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He currently serves as Chairman of the AAOMS Committee on Anesthesia and serves as a facilitator for the Office-Based Emergency Airway Management (OBEAM) simulation course. Dr. Harper also serves as treasurer for the American Dental Society of Anesthesia (ADSA) and is an instructor for the ADSA simulation course. James A. Phero\, DDS\, MDAssistant Professor\, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Phero earned his medical and dental degrees from the University of North Carolina\, where he also completed his postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been active in academic education\, research\, and administrative activities since joining the University of Cincinnati Department of Surgery in 2019. Dr. Phero’s clinical practice focuses on corrective jaw surgery\, facial trauma and reconstruction\, temporomandibular joint surgery and the management of benign head and neck pathology. In addition to his clinical practice\, Dr. Phero has an additional interest in emergency training. He is an American Heart Association (AHA) Instructor in BLS\, ACLS\, and PALS. He is active at UC and nationally in teaching team simulation training for evaluation and management of medical emergencies. Dentists must be prepared to assess risk\, respond confidently\, and lead the dental team through emergency situations while providing safe\, evidence-based care. This four-hour continuing education program provides a comprehensive review of the prevention\, recognition\, and management of medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office. Participants will explore strategies for identifying medically compromised patients\, minimizing the risk of emergencies through thorough patient assessment and treatment planning\, and responding appropriately when emergencies arise. Topics include the recognition and management of syncope\, allergic reactions and anaphylaxis\, hypoglycemia\, seizures\, asthma\, chest pain\, stroke\, and cardiac arrest. The course will also review current recommendations for Basic Life Support (BLS)\, the proper use of emergency medications and equipment\, and best practices for developing office emergency protocols\, assigning team roles\, and conducting emergency preparedness drills. Through case-based discussions and practical application of current clinical guidelines\, participants will strengthen their ability to make timely clinical decisions and effectively manage medical emergencies in the dental setting. Upon completion of the course\, dentists will be better equipped to provide safe patient care and lead their teams with confidence during medical emergencies. Harper\, D.D.S.\, M.S. Dr. Harper completed his residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Ohio State University in 1986. He served in the United States Air Force for seven years\, three years as a restorative dentist and four years as an OMS. Dr. Harper has maintained a private practice in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, for the past 37 years. He has had an appointment with the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Cincinnati since 1990 and is actively involved in resident training. Dr. Harper currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery\, teaching academic courses in Surgical Anatomy and Medicine/Anesthesia topics for the OMS residents. In addition\, he has an appointment with the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center\, where he is actively involved in OMS resident clinical training. Dr. Harper is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has served as a Board examiner. He is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He currently serves as Chairman of the AAOMS Committee on Anesthesia and serves as a facilitator for the Office-Based Emergency Airway Management (OBEAM) simulation course. Dr. Harper also serves as treasurer for the American Dental Society of Anesthesia (ADSA) and is an instructor for the ADSA simulation course. James A. Phero\, DDS\, MDAssistant Professor\, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Phero earned his medical and dental degrees from the University of North Carolina\, where he also completed his postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been active in academic education\, research\, and administrative activities since joining the University of Cincinnati Department of Surgery in 2019. Dr. Phero’s clinical practice focuses on corrective jaw surgery\, facial trauma and reconstruction\, temporomandibular joint surgery and the management of benign head and neck pathology. He has had an appointment with the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Cincinnati since 1990 and is actively involved in resident training. Dr. Harper currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery\, teaching academic courses in Surgical Anatomy and Medicine/Anesthesia topics for the OMS residents. Dentists must be prepared to assess risk\, respond confidently\, and lead the dental team through emergency situations while providing safe\, evidence-based care. This four-hour continuing education program provides a comprehensive review of the prevention\, recognition\, and management of medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office. Participants will explore strategies for identifying medically compromised patients\, minimizing the risk of emergencies through thorough patient assessment and treatment planning\, and responding appropriately when emergencies arise. Topics include the recognition and management of syncope\, allergic reactions and anaphylaxis\, hypoglycemia\, seizures\, asthma\, chest pain\, stroke\, and cardiac arrest. The course will also review current recommendations for Basic Life Support (BLS)\, the proper use of emergency medications and equipment\, and best practices for developing office emergency protocols\, assigning team roles\, and conducting emergency preparedness drills. Through case-based discussions and practical application of current clinical guidelines\, participants will strengthen their ability to make timely clinical decisions and effectively manage medical emergencies in the dental setting. He served in the United States Air Force for seven years\, three years as a restorative dentist and four years as an OMS. Dr. Harper has maintained a private practice in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, for the past 37 years. He has had an appointment with the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Cincinnati since 1990 and is actively involved in resident training. Dr. Harper currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery\, teaching academic courses in Surgical Anatomy and Medicine/Anesthesia topics for the OMS residents. In addition\, he has an appointment with the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center\, where he is actively involved in OMS resident clinical training. Dr. Harper is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has served as a Board examiner. He is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He currently serves as Chairman of the AAOMS Committee on Anesthesia and serves as a facilitator for the Office-Based Emergency Airway Management (OBEAM) simulation course. Dr. Harper also serves as treasurer for the American Dental Society of Anesthesia (ADSA) and is an instructor for the ADSA simulation course. James A. Phero\, DDS\, MDAssistant Professor\, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Phero earned his medical and dental degrees from the University of North Carolina\, where he also completed his postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been active in academic education\, research\, and administrative activities since joining the University of Cincinnati Department of Surgery in 2019. Dentists must be prepared to assess risk\, respond confidently\, and lead the dental team through emergency situations while providing safe\, evidence-based care. This four-hour continuing education program provides a comprehensive review of the prevention\, recognition\, and management of medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office. Participants will explore strategies for identifying medically compromised patients\, minimizing the risk of emergencies through thorough patient assessment and treatment planning\, and responding appropriately when emergencies arise. Topics include the recognition and management of syncope\, allergic reactions and anaphylaxis\, hypoglycemia\, seizures\, asthma\, chest pain\, stroke\, and cardiac arrest. The course will also review current recommendations for Basic Life Support (BLS)\, the proper use of emergency medications and equipment\, and best practices for developing office emergency protocols\, assigning team roles\, and conducting emergency preparedness drills. Through case-based discussions and practical application of current clinical guidelines\, participants will strengthen their ability to make timely clinical decisions and effectively manage medical emergencies in the dental setting. Upon completion of the course\, dentists will be better equipped to provide safe patient care and lead their teams with confidence during medical emergencies. Learning ObjectivesUpon completion of this course\, participants will be able to: Assess patient risk factors and identify strategies to reduce the likelihood of medical emergencies during dental treatment.Recognize the clinical signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies encountered in the dental office.Apply evidence-based management protocols for medical emergencies\, including syncope\, anaphylaxis\, hypoglycemia\, seizures\, asthma\, stroke\, acute coronary syndromes\, and cardiac arrest.Select and appropriately administer emergency medications and utilize emergency equipment commonly found in dental practices.Integrate current BLS principles into the management of medical emergencies in the dental office.Develop and implement effective office emergency response protocols\, including team member roles\, communication strategies\, and emergency preparedness exercises.About the Speakers Jimmie L. Harper\, D.D.S.\, M.S. Dr. Harper completed his residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Ohio State University in 1986. He served in the United States Air Force for seven years\, three years as a restorative dentist and four years as an OMS. Dr. Harper has maintained a private practice in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, for the past 37 years. He has had an appointment with the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Cincinnati since 1990 and is actively involved in resident training. Dr. Harper currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery\, teaching academic courses in Surgical Anatomy and Medicine/Anesthesia topics for the OMS residents. In addition\, he has an appointment with the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center\, where he is actively involved in OMS resident clinical training. Dr. Harper is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has served as a Board examiner. He is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He currently serves as Chairman of the AAOMS Committee on Anesthesia and serves as a facilitator for the Office-Based Emergency Airway Management (OBEAM) simulation course. Dr. Harper also serves as treasurer for the American Dental Society of Anesthesia (ADSA) and is an instructor for the ADSA simulation course. James A. Phero\, DDS\, MDAssistant Professor\, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dr. Phero earned his medical and dental degrees from the University of North Carolina\, where he also completed his postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been active in academic education\, research\, and administrative activities since joining the University of Cincinnati Department of Surgery in 2019. Dr. Phero’s clinical practice focuses on corrective jaw surgery\, facial trauma and reconstruction\, temporomandibular joint surgery and the management of benign head and neck pathology. In addition to his clinical practice\, Dr. Phero has an additional interest in emergency training. He is an American Heart Association (AHA) Instructor in BLS\, ACLS\, and PALS. He is active at UC and nationally in teaching team simulation training for evaluation and management of medical emergencies. Dr. Phero is the current President of the Ohio Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ODSA) and is on the board of directors for the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA).
